Never look back

He hits her in the face, and she falls to the ground.
He yells and screams and threatens her.
After a while, she gets up, with a tear on her face, and goes upstairs.
She doesn't say anything because she's afraid.
She covers up the scratches and bruises with make up and pretends like everything is okay. One day, he grabs her by the hair and throws her against the wall. Her face hits a picture frame and it falls. He kicks her repeatedly and then marches to the door and slams it shut. as she lays there crying, she slowly turns and looks at the picture. Her son, 3 years old, is now living with someone she doesn't even know. He has some other family and is safe. She finally stands up, packs her bags, and walks out the door, picture in hand.
"never look back" she says quietly to herself.
Now, 4 years later, she gets married to someone new. someone who can give her everything, with nothing in return. someone who cares deeply about her and their baby on the way. someone who would never hurt anyone. Her son, gets to see her every weekend, and to god she thanks. She used to spend endless nights alone, praying for her son.
Now, whenever he comes to visit, he always asks "mom, whatever happened to dad?" and she quickly replies "never look back baby, never look back"
